This summer ZTS existed entirely remotely. After recording our first single we worked together in improvisation and collaborative back-and-forth to write and arrange original songs. By the end of the summer we had finished & recorded 7 original songs, released a cover song and recorded one more cover song to be released at the end of the year. These 7 original songs are currently in production and will be released in the fall of 2020. The album, No Replay, shares its name with the first original song written by this summer's group. We've already released the first two singles from No Replay. The first is "Go Out," an upbeat bubble gum pop record that originated with two short melodies which layer together in the intro and the chorus. These melodies emerged through our regular improv practice in which we individually created short melodies, basslines and rhythms, dropped them into Google Drive and then experimented with each other's creations. "Go Out" is also unique in that it features Tori on vocal percussion. You'll hear Kat and Lauren trade off the lead vocal, respectively. "Rainy Sunday" originated with a repetitive piano accompaniment that we created during a Zoom meeting; this became the opening theme. Soon after Tori freely improvised over the theme and, believe it or not, this freestyle emotional melody barely received any edits before making it into the final version (verse 1 & chorus). We decided to keep the background vocals simple to let Tori's lead vocal shine. Our first single of the summer is here! "Don't Need Nobody," originally performed by Ellie Goulding, is an uptempo EDM-inspired love song that you can't help but dance to. You'll get to hear all of our members shine--Kat on verse 1, Lauren on the pre-choruses, Tori on verse 2, and BK on the bridge. Lukas is rocking bass, baritone AND vocal percussion throughout. Our a cappella version is very true to the original; we just couldn't get away from that killer bass groove that just drives through all three-and-a-half minutes of the song. Have a listen below!
